Erectile dysfunction is interesting in that it is a medical condition but can cause significant anxiety and emotional distress compared to many other medical conditions. This anxiety, embarrassment and distress often will prevent men from seeking treatment. This is unfortunate because almost all men can have resumption of sexual intercourse if they desire. Here I will give an overview of the treatment options and provide video content to help understand your options.

Oral medications are first line therapy. These include Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra. Men often have concerns about the safety of these medications. The only absolute contraindication(meaning you cannot take this medicine) is use of nitrate containing medications such as nitroglycerin. These medications are safe but some side effects are possible. These generally need to be take before sex and while safe can have some side effects. These medications must be take as prescribed and aided by sexual stimulation to work.

If oral medications do not work or are contraindicated we move onto other options. This includes penile injection therapy. This is just what it sounds like. Prior to intercourse a needle is inserted into the side of the penis and this increases blood flow into the penis. While effective for many men it is not effective for all. Some men discontinue this therapy because they cannot tolerate injecting themselves.

There is also MUSE or a urethral suppository. This is rarely used because of expense, penile pain and lack of effectiveness.

If the above therapies do not work or are not desired/tolerated then a man can give consideration to a penile implant. This is a hydraulic device where cylinders which fill with fluid are implanted into the penis. This is an outpatient surgery with a recovery of 1-2 weeks. These implants consistently provide firm erections and the implants last on average 12-15 years. If considering this surgery it is important to find an expert in your area. I am including a link to a physician finder so you can find an expert in your area.
